If you’ve never been to North Head in Devonport you’re in for a treat. Climb (or drive) to the top and capture the incredible views over Auckland from Devonport. Afterwards, wind your way through boutique shops and cafes before catching the ferry home again.

What to prepare

  • 450g self raising flour

  • ¼ tsp salt

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 100g cold butter (cut into cubes)

  • 1 tbsp caster sugar

  • 285ml buttermilk

  • splash of buttermilk mixed with 3 tsp sugar or egg wash for glazing 

How to make them

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper.

  2. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt into a bowl.

  3. Add butter and using your fingers mix into the flour. Check you can still see pieces of butter (this will keep scones moist).

  4. Make a well in the mixture and add the buttermilk. Stir into a sticky dough.

  5. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and roll to 2cm thick. Using a 6cm round cutter, cut into circles.

  6. Place scones on prepared tray. Brush with buttermilk glaze or egg

    wash and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden.

  7. To serve, slice in half and top with jam, then a dollop of whipped cream.
