KAKAMATUA INLET
Kakamatua is doggy heaven, one of the most dog-friendly beaches in Auckland. A perfect trip for a weekend away with your BFF. Low tide is the best time to go, giving you plenty of access to the open sandy space and freshwater stream so your pup can cool down with a swim.
What to prepare
For the shortbread:
-
225g plain flour
-
50g cocoa powder
-
140g caster sugar
-
200g unsalted butter
For the dog treats:
-
⅔ cup pumpkin puree
-
¼ cup peanut butter
-
2 eggs
-
2-3 cups whole wheat flour
How to make the shortbread
-
Put all dry ingredients (flour, cocoa powder, sugar) into the food processor and whizz to combine.
-
Cut the butter into cubes and mix in a blender until the mixture comes together into dough.
-
Press mixture into a loose bottomed, 8 inch square tin and smooth over with the back of a spoon.
-
Bake at 180°C for 25 minutes until firm. Then sprinkle with caster sugar.
How to make the dog treats
-
In the bowl mix pumpkin puree, peanut butter & eggs until combined. Gradually add 2 cups flour, beating just until incorporated.

Working on a lightly floured surface, knead the dough 3-4 times until it comes together.
-
Using a rolling pin, roll the dough to ¼ inch thickness & cut into shapes.
-
Place in oven at 180°C and bake about 20-25 minutes. Serve when cool.
