Teresa’s Oka Raw Fish

SHELLY BEACH, COROMANDEL

Location

My favourite picnic spot is
SHELLY BEACH, COROMANDEL

Spend the day catching fresh fish for this dish. Then enjoy the beautiful, refreshing taste of Oka at Shelly Beach. Oka is a traditional Samoan Raw fish dish, although you will also find it in other countries under different names. It’s a crowd favourite at a picnic or BBQ

What to prepare

  • 4 fillets of raw fish – this could be Trevally, Tarakihi, or Kahawai

  • 6 lemons, squeezed

  • ½ telegraph cucumber, evenly chopped

  • 3 tomatoes, de-seeded and evenly chopped

  • 1 ½ cans of coconut cream

  • chilli (optional)

How to make them

  1. Cut the raw fish into evenly sized pieces, approximately 5mm thick.

  2. Cover with the lemon juice and put in the fridge for 1 hour.

  3. Add the coconut cream, cucumber and tomatoes.

  4. Add salt, pepper and chilli to taste.
